Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective myelin coating around nerve fibres, slowing or scrambling the signals between brain and body. Symptoms vary widely and often come and go. Modern treatments and rehabilitation mean most people live full, active lives. Start with what is multiple sclerosis?
A condition that varies
MS can affect movement, balance, vision, sensation, thinking, and energy - and it’s different for everyone. Many people have relapses (flare-ups) followed by recovery. Because myelin insulates the “wiring” (see white matter), signals can slow when it’s damaged.
How the brain is involved
MS lesions can appear anywhere in the brain and spinal cord, but the cerebellum (balance, coordination) and brainstem are often involved, which is why balance and coordination work are common in rehab.
