A traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when a blow or jolt to the head disrupts how the brain works. It ranges from a concussion (mild TBI) to severe injury, and no two are the same. The brain’s ability to rewire means recovery - though it can take time and patience.
Severity is a spectrum
- Mild (concussion) - brief change in awareness; symptoms usually settle with rest.
- Moderate to severe - longer effects on thinking, movement, or behaviour that benefit from structured rehabilitation.

How the brain is involved
The frontal and temporal lobes are especially vulnerable, which is why attention, planning, memory, mood, and self-control are often affected. Effects depend on where and how hard the brain was injured.

The road to recovery
