Aphasia is a language problem caused by damage to the brain’s language areas - often after a stroke or brain injury. It can affect speaking, understanding, reading, or writing. Crucially, aphasia does not affect intelligence - the person is as capable and aware as ever; the words just get stuck.

Types of aphasia

Different language areas produce different patterns:

  • Broca’s (expressive) - understanding is better than speaking; words come slowly.
  • Wernicke’s (receptive) - speech flows but meaning is muddled; understanding is harder.
  • Global - both are affected; every small strategy helps.

How the brain is involved
