Aphasia affects language, not intelligence - and language can keep improving with practice and support.
Aphasia is a language problem caused by damage to the brain’s language areas - often after a stroke or brain injury. It can affect speaking, understanding, reading, or writing. Crucially, aphasia does not affect intelligence - the person is as capable and aware as ever; the words just get stuck.

Types of aphasia
Different language areas produce different patterns:
- Broca’s (expressive) - understanding is better than speaking; words come slowly.
- Wernicke’s (receptive) - speech flows but meaning is muddled; understanding is harder.
- Global - both are affected; every small strategy helps.

How the brain is involved
Language usually lives in the left hemisphere: Broca’s area in the frontal lobe (producing speech) and Wernicke’s area in the temporal lobe (understanding it).
