The lobes and what they do

A plain-language guide to the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes plus the cerebellum and brainstem - what each does and what can change if it's affected.

Each half of the cerebrum has four lobes, and below them sit the cerebellum and brainstem. Here’s what each part does - and, honestly and hopefully, what can change if it’s affected. See the brain hub for region cards at a glance.

Frontal lobe - the director

Behind your forehead, the frontal lobe plans, decides, and starts action. It holds much of your personality, motivation, and self-control, and its back edge (the motor strip) launches voluntary movement. The left frontal lobe also drives speech production (Broca’s area).

If it’s affected: changes in planning, drive, attention, movement, or word-finding are common - and often improve with structured, repeated practice.

Parietal lobe - the mapmaker

Near the top and back, the parietal lobe blends touch, temperature, and body position with what you see to build a map of your body and the space around you - essential for reaching, grasping, and navigating.

If it’s affected: trouble judging space, coordinating reach, or neglect of one side can occur; scanning and reaching strategies help.

Temporal lobe - sound and memory

By your ears, the temporal lobe turns sound into meaning and understands spoken language (Wernicke’s area). Deep inside sits the hippocampus, the brain’s memory-maker.

If it’s affected: understanding speech, forming new memories, or recognising faces can be harder; memory aids and communication strategies help day to day.

Occipital lobe - vision

At the very back, the occipital lobe is the visual cortex - it turns signals from your eyes into the scene you experience.

If it’s affected: gaps in the field of view or trouble interpreting what’s seen can occur; vision-aware rehab helps the brain adapt.

Cerebellum - smooth and steady

The “little brain” at the back-bottom doesn’t start movement, but it makes it smooth, balanced, and well-timed, and helps you learn new motor skills.

If it’s affected: unsteady walking, clumsy or shaky movement (ataxia), and balance problems can occur; balance and coordination training help.

Brainstem - life-support and relay

The stalk to the spinal cord quietly runs the essentials - breathing, heartbeat, swallowing, alertness - and carries every message between brain and body.

If it’s affected: swallowing, balance, or alertness can be affected; specialist rehab supports safe eating and daily function.
