Understanding visual neglect after stroke

When one side of the world seems to disappear - what neglect is and simple strategies to help scan the whole space.

Neglect is when a stroke makes it hard to notice one side of space - often the left. It is an attention problem, not a problem with the eyes.

What you might notice

  • Bumping into things on one side.
  • Eating food from only half the plate.
  • Missing words on one side of the page.

Everyday strategies

  • Consciously turn the head to scan the missed side.
  • Place important items on the stronger side at first.
  • Use a bright marker at the edge of the page to find it.

Practising scanning

  • Play spotting and searching games.
  • Practise looking left-to-right deliberately.
  • Have a helper cue the neglected side.

Stay safe

  • Take extra care near roads and stairs.
  • Reduce clutter on the affected side.
  • Ask your therapist for tailored techniques.
