Supporting a late talker

Everyday, play-based ways to encourage language in a child who is slower to start talking.

If your child is slow to start talking, everyday interactions are your most powerful tool. Rich, responsive talk helps language grow.

Talk through the day

  • Narrate what you and your child are doing.
  • Name objects, actions, and feelings.
  • Pause to give them a turn.

Follow their lead

  • Comment on what they are interested in.
  • Get down to their level and share attention.
  • Expand on their sounds and words.

Make it playful

  • Sing songs and rhymes with actions.
  • Read picture books together often.
  • Use gestures and expression.

Reduce barriers

  • Limit background screen noise.
  • Offer choices to prompt words.
  • Reduce pressure - keep it fun.
