Protecting the shoulder after stroke
A weak arm can leave the shoulder vulnerable. Positioning and handling tips to prevent pain.
When an arm is weak after stroke, the shoulder joint can be easily strained. Careful positioning and handling help prevent pain.
Why the shoulder is at risk
- Weak muscles no longer support the joint well.
- Gravity can pull on the arm.
- Careless handling can cause injury.
Positioning tips
- Support the arm on pillows when resting.
- Avoid letting the arm dangle.
- Keep the shoulder in a comfortable, supported position.
Safe handling
- Never pull on the weak arm to move the person.
- Support under the arm, not by the hand.
- Move slowly and with care.
Watch for problems
- Report new or increasing shoulder pain.
- Notice swelling or reduced movement.
- Ask your therapist about safe exercises.
