Returning to work after brain injury

A staged, supported return to work often works best. How to plan pacing, adjustments, and communication.

Going back to work after a brain injury is a big step. A gradual, well-planned return usually works better than rushing back full-time.

Plan a phased return

  • Start with reduced hours or duties.
  • Build up gradually as stamina returns.
  • Agree a clear plan with your employer.

Helpful adjustments

  • A quiet space to reduce distraction.
  • Regular breaks to manage fatigue.
  • Written notes and checklists for memory.

Manage energy

  • Tackle demanding tasks when freshest.
  • Protect recovery time outside work.
  • Notice and respect early warning signs of overload.

Communicate

  • Share what helps you work well.
  • Review the plan regularly.
  • Ask about occupational health support.
