Nutrition and hydration in dementia

Eating and drinking can become harder with dementia. Practical ideas to support good nutrition.

Good food and fluids support energy, mood, and health. Dementia can make mealtimes harder, but small adjustments help a lot.

Make mealtimes easier

  • Serve one course at a time to reduce overwhelm.
  • Use contrasting plates so food stands out.
  • Keep the table calm and unhurried.

Encourage eating

  • Offer favourite, familiar foods.
  • Try finger foods if cutlery is hard.
  • Eat together - social meals encourage appetite.

Stay hydrated

  • Offer drinks regularly, not just at meals.
  • Try soups, fruit, and jellies for extra fluid.
  • Watch for signs of dehydration.

When to get advice

  • Unplanned weight loss.
  • Coughing when eating or drinking.
  • Ongoing refusal of food - ask for support.
