Hydration and the brain

Even mild dehydration can affect focus and energy. Easy ways to drink enough through the day.

The brain works best when you’re well hydrated. Even mild dehydration can dull focus, mood, and energy - and it’s easy to prevent.

Why it matters

  • Hydration supports concentration and alertness.
  • Dehydration can worsen fatigue and headaches.
  • Older adults may feel thirst less reliably.

Drink through the day

  • Sip regularly rather than gulping occasionally.
  • Keep a bottle or cup within reach.
  • Link drinks to routines (meals, medication).

Other sources of fluid

  • Soups, fruit, and vegetables count.
  • Milk and diluted juice add up.
  • Watch caffeine, which can be dehydrating in excess.

Watch for signs

  • Dark urine, dry mouth, or dizziness.
  • Increased confusion in vulnerable people.
  • Offer drinks proactively to those at risk.
