Using gestures, drawing, and props to communicate

When words are hard to find, other channels can carry the message. Practical multimodal communication ideas.

Communication is more than words. Gestures, drawing, pointing, and props are all valid, powerful tools - especially with aphasia.

Total communication

Use every channel available, together, to get the message across.

  • Point to objects, photos, or menu items.
  • Draw a quick sketch to explain an idea.
  • Act it out with gestures or facial expression.

Handy props

  • A small notebook and pen for writing or drawing.
  • A phone with photos of people and places.
  • A simple picture or alphabet board.

Make it a habit

  • Model gestures yourself so they feel natural.
  • Keep tools within easy reach.
  • Praise any successful exchange, however it happened.

Build confidence

  • Start with familiar topics.
  • Celebrate getting the message across, not perfect words.
  • Practise little and often in low-pressure moments.
