Building fine-motor skills in young children

Playful activities that strengthen little hands for drawing, dressing, and self-care.

Fine-motor skills let children draw, dress, and feed themselves. Everyday play builds the small muscles and coordination they need.

Strengthen little hands

  • Play with dough, clay, and putty.
  • Squeeze sponges and spray bottles.
  • Tear and scrunch paper.

Practise the pincer grip

  • Pick up small items (with supervision).
  • Thread large beads.
  • Use tongs to move objects.

Everyday practice

  • Encourage self-dressing with buttons and zips.
  • Let them help with simple cooking.
  • Offer chunky crayons for scribbling.

Keep it positive

  • Follow their interests.
  • Keep tasks short and achievable.
  • Praise effort and persistence.
