Falls are common and often preventable. A room-by-room checklist to make the home safer.

Falls can set back recovery, but many are preventable. A few home changes and habits reduce the risk substantially.

Clear the way

  • Remove clutter and loose cables from walkways.
  • Secure or remove loose rugs.
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach.

Light it up

  • Improve lighting on stairs and hallways.
  • Use night lights for trips to the bathroom.
  • Keep a lamp within reach of the bed.

Support and grip

  • Add grab rails where helpful.
  • Use non-slip mats in the bathroom.
  • Wear supportive, well-fitting footwear.

Stay steady

  • Keep active to maintain strength and balance.
  • Stand up slowly to avoid dizziness.
  • Review medications that affect balance with your doctor.
