Creating a dementia-friendly home
Simple changes around the house that support independence, orientation, and safety.
Small, thoughtful changes to the home can reduce confusion and help a person with dementia stay safe and independent for longer.
Support orientation
- Keep a large, clear clock and calendar visible.
- Label cupboards and doors with words or pictures.
- Leave familiar objects in consistent places.
Improve safety
- Reduce clutter and trip hazards.
- Improve lighting, especially on stairs and at night.
- Consider safety devices for the stove and taps.
Reduce confusion
- Use plain, non-reflective floors and mats.
- Avoid busy patterns that can look like objects.
- Contrast plates and food to aid eating.
Keep it familiar
- Preserve favourite chairs, photos, and routines.
- Introduce changes gradually.
- Involve the person in decisions where possible.
