Creating a dementia-friendly home

Simple changes around the house that support independence, orientation, and safety.

Small, thoughtful changes to the home can reduce confusion and help a person with dementia stay safe and independent for longer.

Support orientation

  • Keep a large, clear clock and calendar visible.
  • Label cupboards and doors with words or pictures.
  • Leave familiar objects in consistent places.

Improve safety

  • Reduce clutter and trip hazards.
  • Improve lighting, especially on stairs and at night.
  • Consider safety devices for the stove and taps.

Reduce confusion

  • Use plain, non-reflective floors and mats.
  • Avoid busy patterns that can look like objects.
  • Contrast plates and food to aid eating.

Keep it familiar

  • Preserve favourite chairs, photos, and routines.
  • Introduce changes gradually.
  • Involve the person in decisions where possible.
