Concussion recovery basics
What a concussion is, the typical recovery path, and the balance between rest and gradual return to activity.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. Most people recover well, especially with the right balance of rest and gradual activity.
Common symptoms
- Headache, dizziness, or feeling foggy.
- Sensitivity to light or noise.
- Trouble concentrating or sleeping.
Early days
- Rest is helpful at first - but not total, prolonged rest.
- Avoid activities with re-injury risk.
- Limit demanding screen time initially.
Gradual return
- Slowly reintroduce activity as symptoms allow.
- Step back a level if symptoms flare.
- Return to sport only with proper clearance.
Seek urgent care if
- Worsening headache or repeated vomiting.
- Increasing drowsiness or confusion.
- Weakness, seizures, or unequal pupils.
