Concussion recovery basics

What a concussion is, the typical recovery path, and the balance between rest and gradual return to activity.

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. Most people recover well, especially with the right balance of rest and gradual activity.

Common symptoms

  • Headache, dizziness, or feeling foggy.
  • Sensitivity to light or noise.
  • Trouble concentrating or sleeping.

Early days

  • Rest is helpful at first - but not total, prolonged rest.
  • Avoid activities with re-injury risk.
  • Limit demanding screen time initially.

Gradual return

  • Slowly reintroduce activity as symptoms allow.
  • Step back a level if symptoms flare.
  • Return to sport only with proper clearance.

Seek urgent care if

  • Worsening headache or repeated vomiting.
  • Increasing drowsiness or confusion.
  • Weakness, seizures, or unequal pupils.
